LISBOA A COMPOSTAR (LISBON COMPOSTING) is a project that aims at training in composting, offering a domestic composter to residents who have space to install it and the continued support of THE LISBON CITY COUNCIL to residents who, through registration, express their interest in reducing their domestic waste, producing fertilizer that will be used in their backyard, yard or garden.
If you do not have enough land space to install your composter, you can still register and show interest in community composting. The Lisbon City Council began the installation of pilot community composters in four parishes: Ajuda, Areeiro, Campolide and Olivais.
Doing domestic composting avoids forwarding for the incineration of recoverable waste. In 2017 alone, more than 600 tons of common waste were collected daily in Lisbon, of which 40% were biodegradable and sent for incineration. The Lisbon City Council proposes to reverse this process at its origin, providing residents with a way to recycle this waste in their homes, with economic and environmental advantages.
Instead of throwing away the leftovers from the preparation of meals, specifically fruits and vegetables, in the garbage container, we can put them in the composter. We cover them with small branches, herbs and leaves and let Nature take its course. It is very simple and natural.
Compost is the result of the biological transformation process, which we call composting. In this process we obtain a fertilizer or fertilizer that acts as an agricultural corrector in the soil, nourishing the soil, improving its physical, chemical properties and structure, avoiding the costly and polluting consumption of chemical fertilizers.
